A Database Administrator (a.k.a. DBA) is a person responsible for the installation, configuration, upgrade, administration, monitoring, migration and maintenance of databases in an organization. Other tasks include designing of database strategies, and improving database performance, capacity planning for future expansion requirements.

A Day in a Database Administrator’s Life:
- Install, configure, monitor and administer various databases in the company
- Test programs or databases, correct errors and make necessary modifications
- Monitor and optimize the performance of database systems
- Work with programmers, analysts and other administrators on daily tasks
- Plan, coordinate and implement data security measures
- Work on database upgrades, migrations and patch management
- Train and work with database application users and answer questions
- Specify users and user access levels for each segment of database.
- Approve, schedule, supervise the installation and testing of new installations
- Develop standards and guidelines to guide the use and acquisition of software
Skills Required:
- Strong knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) & RDBMS
- Logical reasoning and immediate problem troubleshooting ability
- Independent complex problem solving, self-directed and self-starting
- Good understanding of Operating Systems & Client-Server Architecture
- Willingness to work long hours during database maintenance & outages
- Strong troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work easily with customers and other IT Teams
- Ability to keep updated with latest database versions & technologies
- Good team player
